G Class Conversion

Our potent 280GE has had served us well particularly for heavy hauling and not to mention for heavy hauling during the numerous trips to our remote yet punishing track 700metre above the sea level villa. That was the day prior to track had been topped off with smooth asphalt surface.

The 125metre long steep ascend section, I believe close to 45 degree angle inclination covered with mainly boulder rock posed no threat at all to the 280GE, and what’s best, it delivered the harsh bewildering track with high comfort and secure feeling. It’s a pity to this day I could not find any photos as the reminder to our blue metallic 280GE.

Last week during the visit at a Mercedes Benz specialist, I just could not help stopping the overflow lingering memory to our 1985 280GE as seeing two Black 280GEs at the shop. One being a Long Wheel Base chassis has been receiving G Class Conversion work where as the other one a SWB model gets partial engine overhaul work.

Automatic G Class Conversion
The G Class Conversion on LWB 280GE involves engine conversion from its traditional screaming DOHC into torquey Toyota Diesel, obviously the engine conversion would help a lot in the running cost aspect, as well as good low down torque for daily bumper to bumper traffic. it now has Automatic transmission.

This converted 280GE is in immaculate condition outside with rear 1990s lamp from 300GE, inside it also has similar period of interior, as I recall our G Class has black interior. The donor power plant is sourced from the latest Toyota Prado. This G Class Conversion does not require complex shop works to mate to its original Four Wheel Transfer Case.

The Four Wheel Drive Transfer Case is the best part of G Class as it could cope with High speed Four Wheel driving mode. As I recall driving in heavy torrential rain the 280GE beast could be turned into a rudimentary rally driving Subaru Imprezza, or fairly close to it.

Hi Gilbert, regrettably we had sold ours long time ago. I wish I could've done similar conversion too.

However the converted G shown above was being done at our friendly Mercedes specialist, as we're in the midst of long holiday at the moment, I'd have to get back to you for some more pictures.

The only hurdle for such work as I recall is figuring around the link from Prado transmission to the G wagen transfer case.
