Fuel Tank Replacement is the last thing I could think of. Unless it happens in the most awkward time. We are just getting ready to head back to our home town from Bandung about 15o km away, and since it is lunch time we are having our meal peacefully. That is until a strong pungent of gas / petrol smell lingering to the air.
To make it worst it is just filled up to its full tank capacity, and apparently the fuel sips out just as fast as we are drinking our last sip of orange juice. The thought of hazardous highly flammable gas leak is my worst panicking nightmare.
It turns out that since this Classic 1997 Accord or known elsewhere as SV4 Accord has been left unused for over a year period with its fuel tank full, the low quality and corrosive 88Ron fuel has damaged the upper outside tank surface.
And recently I have switched to 90Ron to seek out better performance that triggers surface rust getting into deep within the cross section of metal causing small holes enough to leak out..
Despite of its 20 maturing years old age the SV4 is still quite a joy to drive, 145 hp is not that big horse but it manages to lead the traffic along our extensive Toll road to and from Bandung. Especially important we need that much horses to climb around 500 meter altitude within the last few sections of Purbaleunyi Toll.
Though not as mature compare to our e28 BMW Project Car its chassis is nevertheless quite capable in dealing with uneven surface which hampers most of our Toll Road. A secure poise and handling with comfortable old fashionable style conventional automatic shifter is a blast performer than today CVT counterpart. Often a CVT equipped latest car is trailing behind running out of breath in those ascending sections.
As soon as we head back to our Hotel and unload all of our baggage the SV4 is getting ready on the hydraulic post and down is her 55 liters of fuel, the lowered tank reveals the damage. Due to time constraint we manage to just cover the holes with the strongest glue that we could grab for temporary fix.
And that is exactly 3 month ago today, I then never fully fill up her tank and just 2 weeks ago manages to get a 2nd hand Fuel Tank Replacement.

Saving on maturing SV4 is one thing, yet saving a good reliable close to perfect running old car over purchasing a new one is entirely another dimension.
Betting on keeping Reliable 97 Accord over big saving on Chrysler car prices....wouldn't you agree!?
